my routine when I feel like giving up

A soft guide for the days when just existing feels like too much
A soft guide for the days when just existing feels like too much

There are days when I don’t want a productivity hack.I want permission to fall apart slowly, and still find a way to stand up again. This isn’t a morning routine for “boss babes” or a checklist for high-performance.This is what I do when getting out of bed feels like an act of survival. And I still have to show up. For work. For people. For life.

So here it is, my routine when I feel like giving up.

Step 1: Before I move, I place my hand on my chest

I don’t grab my phone.I don’t open my eyes all the way. I just lay there and say, in my mind: “I’m still here.” That’s where it starts.

Optional support:

Step 2: Water = Life

I get out of bed and wash my face. Not because I feel like it. Because it tells my body we’re awake. Then I drink a full glass of water. Sometimes I add lemon. Sometimes it’s just tap water. Doesn’t matter. It’s the signal: we’re still going.

Optional tools:

Step 3: Soft clothes, not stylish ones

I don’t force myself into “real clothes.” I choose something that feels like a hug.

Think:

You’re not dressing to impress. You’re dressing to get through.

Step 4: Something warm and simple

If I can eat, I do. If I can’t, I sip. Most mornings, I reach for:

No fancy breakfast. No effort meals. Just fuel.

Step 5: Let sound carry you

I never underestimate what a playlist can do for my nervous system. Most days, I turn on:

  • Lo-fi beats

  • Nature sounds

  • Gentle podcast episodes (voices that don’t yell)

Noise-canceling earbuds help too — these ones are affordable and magic on public transit.

Step 6: Let the planner hold your brain

When my mind is spiraling, I don’t trust myself to remember anything. So I lean on paper.

I fill out just one part of my planner, not all of it. Sometimes just:

  • “Today I will…”

  • “What I’m feeling:”

  • “What I need today (if anything)”

This isn’t a glamorous routine. It’s a survival rhythm. If you’re reading this while feeling low, I want you to know: You’re not broken. You’re tired. And you’re trying. That counts for something.

Even the quietest attempts to keep going… are courage in disguise.

Optional extras that help me:

Pin this post. Share it with someone who needs it. Save it for your future self.

Because Routine is Cool is not about controlling life, it’s about creating small rhythms that let you survive it with softness.
