Updated: May 13

Another year is starting, and my list of places to visit just keeps getting longer! The beginning of the year is like that, full of plans and dreams! With that in mind, I decided to write this post with 6 cities to visit in Europe in 2022!

Below, I’ll share what to do, how many days to stay, and how to get to 6 amazing European cities, including a few classic destinations and some hidden gems. And hey, if you can’t plan a trip for 2022, no worries, save this post so you don’t lose the tips and start planning for 2023 instead!

Shall we get to the list?

Cities to visit in Europe in 2022

Budapest

I'm starting the list with an affordable and unmissable option! Just so you can locate it on the map, Budapest is the capital of Hungary, part of the European Union, but it doesn’t use the euro as its official currency. Its currency is the forint.

How to get there: You can arrive by plane, bus, car, or train, it all depends on your starting point. If you're coming from Vienna (Austria), it's 240 km away. From Bratislava (Slovakia), it’s 200 km.

How many days to stay: At least 2 full days (not counting the day you arrive or leave). But if you have more time, staying 4 days is worth it.

What to do: Visit the Hungarian Parliament, Buda Castle, St. Stephen’s Basilica, walk along the banks of the Danube River, cross the Chain Bridge, stroll through the city at night to see the landmarks all lit up, and more.

London

The second suggestion on my list of cities to visit in Europe in 2022 is one of the biggest (and most expensive) metropolises in the world! In London, the old and the modern blend together harmoniously, it’s the kind of destination that makes you feel like you’re in a movie.

How to get there: Just like Budapest, you can arrive by plane, bus, car, or train, it depends on where you're coming from. The city has more than one airport and dozens of flights arriving and departing daily. If you're coming from Dublin, for example, the flight takes less than 2 hours.

How many days to stay: At least 4 full days. Ideally, you should stay around 6 days. If you have more than 5 days, you can plan a day trip, I’ve even written a post with suggestions, click here to check it out.

What to do: Visit Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, the Natural History Museum, Camden Town, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Science Museum, The Shard, the London Eye, and many other places.

Santorini

My third suggestion of cities to visit in Europe in 2022 is Santorini. Without a doubt, it’s an incredible destination, full of breathtaking landscapes and perfect for both relaxing and having fun.

How to get there: The most common way is by plane, with flights from Athens taking less than 60 minutes.

How long to stay: Between 3 to 5 days, depending on the purpose of your trip. Many couples choose Santorini for their honeymoon, in this case, staying longer is ideal to enjoy everything at a slower pace.

What to do: Watch the sunset in Oia, visit the beaches (Red Beach, White Beach, Kamari), stroll through the streets of Fira, and take a boat tour.

Edinburgh

It’s the capital of Scotland and one of the most interesting cities in the United Kingdom. Just like London, its official currency is the pound, and the cost of living is not cheap. That said, it's a city full of cultural activities, fascinating architecture, and rich history!

How to get there: It depends on where you're coming from, but you can arrive by plane, bus, or car. If you're traveling from London and want to save money, consider taking a night bus (you’ll save a night of accommodation). If you're coming from Dublin, it's a 7-hour land journey or less than a 90-minute flight.

How many days to stay: At least 2 full days.

What to do: Visit the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle, walk along the Royal Mile, explore Holyrood Park & Arthur’s Seat, and visit the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Prague

To balance out the list of cities to visit in Europe in 2022, my next suggestion is another destination located further east on the continent, and it offers a lower cost of living! Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and, like Budapest, is part of the European Union but has not yet adopted the euro as its official currency.

How to get there: You can get there by plane, car, bus, or train, but the most common ways are by bus and train. For example, if you're coming from Vienna, it's about 290 km. If you're leaving from Berlin, it's around 350 km.

How many days to stay: Between 2 and 3 days is enough to calmly see the basics.

What to do: Visit Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, the Astronomical Clock, Old Town Square, and take a walk through the Historic Center streets.

Ljubljana

To wrap up the list of cities, I’m going to suggest a destination that isn’t very well known among Brazilians: Ljubljana. It’s the capital of Slovenia and is located near Zagreb (Croatia) and Budapest.

How to get there: Although the city has an airport, the most common way to arrive or leave is by bus. If you're coming from Zagreb, it's only 140 km away. From Venice, it's about 240 km.

How many days to stay: Between 2 and 3 days. If you'd like to take a day trip to Lake Bled, I recommend adding one extra day.

What to do: Visit Ljubljana Castle, Prešeren Square, the Dragon Bridge, and the Butcher’s Bridge (known for its love padlocks).
