8 tips to earn airline miles: practical and easy!

Updated: May 12

Do You Use Airline Miles to Travel? If you don’t use them yet, know that you are missing out on the chance to visit many places while spending very little or even nothing. But don’t worry, because in the next few lines, I’m going to give you 08 tips to earn airline miles and travel more!

First of all, it is necessary to make it clear that airline miles and points are not the same thing. In short, you have points when they are not in any mileage program. But when you transfer your credit card points to an airline, then you will have miles.

Tips to earn airline miles

There are several ways to earn miles, my goal here is to tell you the easiest ones, and after implementing them, you can look for others, okay? There is always something new coming up, and the ideal is to constantly read news on the subject!

Have a credit card that accumulates points

This tip for earning miles is essential, fundamental, and needs to be implemented TODAY. If you don’t know whether your card accumulates points or not, you need to find out. To do this, call your bank or check your card’s app.

When you have a card that accumulates points, every purchase you make will earn you something. The number of points will depend on the type of card you have, but that’s a topic for tip 3!

Buy everything you can on your credit card

Gone are the days when it was smart to buy with cash or debit. Now, everything you buy (even a coffee) will be on credit, agreed? The exception to this rule is if they offer you a very good discount for paying by debit, cash, or bank transfer. Do the math and see what’s best.

Black cards accumulate more points

As a general rule, black credit cards are more advantageous because they have more benefits and accumulate more points. And before you think otherwise, they are not just for people who earn a lot of money, you don’t need to make 10,000 to have one.

The main advantages of black cards are access to VIP lounges at airports, no annual fee, discounts at selected stores, and better point accumulation.

Here, you need to know that some cards accumulate points per dollar spent (the most common) and others accumulate per real spent (few cards offer this option, which is better for consumers). Also, some cards offer 1.5 points per dollar spent, while others offer 2.5 or more points. The more points, the better!

Have more than one credit card

Another tip for earning airline miles is that if you can, have more than one credit card brand. Why? Each one offers different advantages. The best ones are American Express, Visa, Mastercard, and Elo, and most are accepted without restrictions in Brazil and abroad.

For example, those who have a Visa credit card get free travel insurance. Having this represents a saving, as in many countries around the world, travel insurance is mandatory.

Do not link your card to one airline

This tip is more for those who only have one credit card. Both airlines and other companies have credit cards, and in this case, your points will be linked to them. Imagine that your card is a Visa from Latam, your points will need to be used with them, as a rule.

The advantage of being linked to an airline is that in some cases, they offer extra benefits, such as discounts on ticket purchases. It is necessary to analyze each case to see if it is worth it.

Make bonus transfers

This tip for earning airline miles is the one that will multiply your points, it’s pure magic! Just kidding, it’s not magic, it’s just strategy.

Airlines frequently have promotions where they announce that if travelers transfer their points to them, they will receive 50%, 80%, or even 100% extra! That is, in a promotion where you get 100% bonus, you double your points, and that’s fantastic!

Keep an eye on these promotions and don’t transfer your points without a bonus. Oh, and it’s important to say that 50% extra is not that interesting, your goal is to transfer only if you get at least 80% bonus, agreed?!

Shop online

Some stores, such as Riachuelo, Natura, and Camicado, offer extra points for online purchases through the Livelo program. Hold on, I’ll explain it better.

These stores have promotions that offer 10 points per real spent on online purchases made through Livelo. So, if you buy a pair of pants for R$150, you will earn 1,500 points + whatever your credit card offers.

Sign up for major airlines

The most basic way to earn airline miles is by flying, but to earn these miles, you need to be enrolled in the airline's program.

So, the tip here is to sign up for the mileage programs of Latam, Azul, and Gol, which are the main airlines in Brazil. You won’t have to pay anything, you don’t need to have a planned trip, just go to each airline’s website and sign up.

So, did you like my tips for earning airline miles? Did you already know any of them? Try to implement all of them, but if you can’t, at least follow the advice from tips 1 and 2!
