There’s definitely no shortage of incredible places to visit in Scotland! The country may be small, but its landscapes are impressively grand! If you're traveling there and still don't know which places to visit, keep reading this post until the end, because I’m going to help you choose a few!
Before anything else, let’s learn a little more about the country?! If you loved geography classes and know everything (or almost everything) about Scotland, you can skip ahead to the “incredible places to visit in Scotland” section.
Capital: Edinburgh.
Currency: Pound sterling.
Official languages: English and Scottish Gaelic.
Official religion: Presbyterianism.
Most populous city: Glasgow.
Scotland is part of the United Kingdom and, since 2020, is no longer in the European Union. It is located in the northern part of Great Britain and shares a land border with England. Another practical piece of information is that the plug type is the same as in England, type G, with 3 thick, flat pins. Oh, and the time zone is also the same as England, which is 3 hours ahead of Brazil.
Incredible places to visit in Scotland
Don’t be fooled by my list! The incredible places to visit in Scotland are not limited to the 6 I'm mentioning in this post! However, if you manage to visit all of them, you’ll already have a very good idea of how beautiful the country is!
Scotland isn’t among the most popular countries for Brazilians. Most people, when going to Europe, prefer to visit France, Spain, Portugal, and restrict their trip to the UK only to London. My advice is: don’t make that mistake, go and explore the country!
Shall we get to the list of the 6 incredible places to visit in Scotland?
Highlands
The Scottish Highlands are a must-visit, one of the incredible places to visit in Scotland! The tip is to rent a car to have time and freedom to explore the region. There are many companies that offer tours there, but everything is very rushed, so the best option is to go on your own!
You can make Inverness your base city to explore both the Highlands and Loch Ness. Set aside at least 2 days.
Edinburgh
The capital is one of the incredible places to visit in Scotland! The city has a lively cultural scene, so there you’ll have plenty of cool things to do! Don’t miss:
Edinburgh Castle – one of the most important castles in the country and one of the city's landmarks. It’s also the second most visited tourist attraction in Scotland! From October to March, it’s open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and in the summer (April to September), it’s open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission = £15.50.
Royal Mile – a famous stretch of road that goes from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Abbey. It has several shops and bustling commerce.
National Museum of Scotland – one of the most amazing museums in the United Kingdom. Free admission.
Holyrood Palace – formerly the residence of kings and queens, it is currently the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II when she visits the capital. From November to March, it’s open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and from April to October from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Set aside at least 2 days to see the main tourist attractions.

Isle of Skye
Just the fact that it has a waterfall that flows into the sea makes the island worth a visit! But the Isle of Skye has much more than that. There you’ll see those movie-like, breathtaking landscapes.
If you’re including it in your itinerary, add one or two extra days to the Highlands part of the trip. It’s possible to do a day trip from Inverness, it’s about a 2.5-hour journey (each way), but the ideal is to take the trip with more time.

Stirling Castle
If you're a fan of the movie Braveheart, starring Mel Gibson, you definitely need to visit this tourist spot.
The castle is located in the city of Stirling, which is very close to Edinburgh, less than a 60-minute drive. If you're not driving and don't want to venture into driving on the left-hand side, you can book a tour to visit the castle.
From April 1st to September 30th, the castle is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. From October 1st to March 31st, it opens at 10:00 a.m. and closes at 4:00 p.m. Tickets cost £16 for adults and £9.60 for children aged 5 to 15.
Glasgow
Scotland’s most populous city is vibrant and a cultural hub of the country. When visiting Glasgow, don’t miss:
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum – one of the most popular free attractions in the country!
Glasgow Necropolis
Riverside Museum – just like Kelvingrove, admission to the museum is free.
Set aside at least one full day to enjoy the city. If possible, spend a night there to experience the local nightlife and cultural vibe.
Loch Ness
It’s the most famous lake in the country, which is why it’s on my list of amazing places to visit in Scotland. Legend has it that a monster lives at the bottom of the lake. The loch is also located in the Highlands region, about 37 km from Inverness.
If the day is nice and sunny, a picnic there is a great idea. If you don’t have much time, plan to spend about 4 hours there. The ideal way to explore it is by car, for more flexibility, but there are also many tours departing from Inverness.
