4 cheap countries to travel to in 2022

Updated: May 12

Once I read the phrase "traveling is not an expense, it is an investment" and I immediately agreed! I consider traveling one of the best things in the world, but I know that it is not always a cheap experience. That’s why I decided to research and share with you which are the 4 cheapest countries to travel to in 2022!

First of all, I wanted to say that my research was not limited to European countries, as I wanted to explore other destinations to share a broader and more democratic list with you.

Cheap countries to travel to in 2022

The list is not numbered in order from the cheapest to the most expensive or vice versa, okay? Let's go!

Argentina

I will start the list of cheap countries to travel to with our neighbor Argentina. The country is a very popular destination among Brazilians, both because of its geographical proximity and its cost of living. Those who want to visit the land of the "hermanos" can easily choose a long holiday and fly to the capital, Buenos Aires.

Flight prices: I will use the city of São Paulo as a parameter. Departing from the São Paulo capital, you will find flights for an average price of R$400. Of course, the ticket price may vary depending on the time of year and how far in advance the tickets are purchased.

Accommodation prices: Just like airfare, accommodation prices can vary greatly depending on the type of lodging (hotel, hostel, guesthouse, Airbnb), location, and the number of people in the room. In Buenos Aires, the average price for a double room per night is R$200.

Food prices: For comparison purposes, I will use the price of a McDonald's combo meal, a liter of milk, and a bottle of domestic beer. In the capital, the price of a combo is R$25, milk costs R$3.65, and beer is R$6.70.

Keep in mind that it is ALWAYS possible to reduce travel costs (or increase them), just have planning and flexibility.

Cambodia

A list of cheap countries to travel to could not miss a destination in Southeast Asia! Cambodia is a culturally rich country that offers many beautiful places! The cost of living there is very low, and currently, their currency is the Riel (R$1 is worth approximately 815 riels).

Flight prices: The most expensive part of your trip will be the airfare, as, like most Asian countries, tickets are not cheap. Departing from São Paulo, the average ticket price is R$7,000. In this case, the best strategy is to fly to Bangkok and then take a flight to Cambodia.

Accommodation prices: In Siem Reap, you can stay in good accommodations for an average price of R$150 per couple. If traveling alone, you can stay in a hostel and pay from R$30.

Food prices: In Siem Reap, the prices for a McDonald's combo meal are R$29, a liter of milk costs R$9, and beer is R$3.80. If you opt for local dishes, you will pay much less!

Hungary

Now, on the list of cheap countries to travel to, we have Hungary, which is one of the most amazing countries in Eastern Europe. Walking through the streets of the capital, Budapest, you will feel like you are inside a history book and will fall in love with the architecture of the buildings and monuments.

Flight prices: Just like Cambodia, direct flights to Budapest may not be the best option in terms of economy, as average prices are around R$5,000. My tip is to fly to a country with a greater and cheaper flight offer, such as Germany (average R$3,000), and from there continue to Budapest.

Accommodation prices: You will find accommodations in the central area for an average price of R$250 per couple. If traveling alone, this price will be from R$50.

Food prices: In the Hungarian capital, the prices for a McDonald's combo meal are R$24, a liter of milk costs R$4, and beer is R$4.

Thailand

Another Asian country with a very interesting cost of living is Thailand, which is why it is on my list of cheap countries to travel to! A trip to Thailand can easily be combined with other affordable neighboring destinations such as Cambodia and Laos.

Flight prices: There is a large offer of flights from Brazil to Bangkok, with the main airlines being Qatar Airways and Emirates. The average flight price varies greatly, but it is possible to find tickets starting from R$3,500.

Exuberant temples, wonderful beaches, welcoming people: this is Thailand.

Accommodation prices: Thailand has several great destinations worth visiting, such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Koh Phi Phi. In the capital, you will find good options for an average price of R$150 per night for a couple.

Food prices: In Bangkok, food is very cheap, and you can eat local food for very affordable prices. There, the prices for a McDonald's combo meal are R$26, a liter of milk costs R$8, and beer is R$8.
