10 places to visit in Berlin, Germany

Updated: May 12

Berlin is one of the most beautiful and historic capitals on the European continent! In the city you can find a little bit of everything, it has history and modernity, culture, gastronomy... It is that democratic destination that pleases most visitors! So, in the next few lines, I will share with you my special list of 10 places to visit in Berlin!

How to Get There?

The capital of Germany used to have two main airports, which were Berlin-Schönefeld (international) and Berlin-Tegel. However, the latter was deactivated at the end of 2020. Also in 2020, the Berlin Brandenburg "Willy Brandt" airport was inaugurated, which is now the city's main airport!

So, if you are going to arrive by air, you will probably land there. If you are in Europe and travel to Berlin by land, you will have 3 options: bus, train, and car.

Ah, to get around within the city, I recommend using public transportation. Both the subway and buses work very well and are safe.

How many days to stay?

Berlin is a large metropolis, with approximately 3.7 million inhabitants. Like every major capital, it offers travelers a variety of interesting things to do.

My tip is to stay at least 3 full days in the city. If you can stay longer, do it. I believe the ideal time to get to know the basics is 5 or 6 days.

10 places to visit in Berlin

Below I’m going to list the 10 places to visit in Berlin that I find most interesting, ok? The German capital has soooo much more to offer! In fact, nearby there's a concentration camp and, if you have time, it's a place worth visiting!

-Parliament

The German Parliament building, known as the Reichstag Building, is one of my top recommendations for places to visit in Berlin. The explanations during the tour are given through an audio guide, and the visit must be scheduled in advance.

Opening hours: it depends, the hours vary according to availability and also the sessions of the parliament.

Ticket: free, but you must book it in advance, click here to do it.

- Tiergarten

It is the most famous park in the city! One of its entrances is close to the Parliament and the Brandenburg Gate. Plan to visit it around midday so you can make a pit stop there to eat and rest a little.

- Brandenburg Gate

It is the most famous postcard of the city and is a kind of triumphal arch. It is located at the intersection of Unter den Linden and Ebertstraße, close to the Parliament and several tourist attractions in the capital.

- Berlin Wall

You can see parts of the wall in several places around the city. One of them is near Checkpoint Charlie, another close to the Topography of Terror, and another near the East Side Gallery. In some places you’ll see the wall itself, in others you’ll only see bricks on the ground.

- Pergamon Museum

It is one of the museums that make up Museum Island in Berlin and is the most visited among them. The museum houses several antiquities, the most famous being the Pergamon Altar, which occupies an entire hall. I recommend setting aside between 90 minutes to 2 hours for the visit, but if you’re really into antiquities, you may spend even more time.

Opening hours: open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday. Closed on Mondays.

Ticket: 12 euros, free for children under 18.

- Topography of Terror

Formed by exhibitions that tell stories related to World War II and Nazism. The museum building is located where, during the war, the Gestapo (secret police) headquarters once operated. Ahh, this is also where you’ll find one of the longest remaining stretches of the Berlin Wall that wasn’t destroyed during bombings and still stands today.

Note: Visitors will have access to bathrooms and Wi-Fi.

Opening hours: daily, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., but in winter the hours may change. Check the official website before your visit to confirm the closing time. You can plan for about 1 hour for the visit.

Ticket: free admission, no need to book in advance.

- Soviet War Memorial and Treptower Park

Memorial honoring the 80,000 Red Army soldiers who lost their lives during the war.

- DDR Museum

It shows what life was like in former East Germany. It’s a more interactive museum, also recommended for kids. I suggest setting aside between 90 minutes to 2 hours for the visit. Ah, nearby are the River Spree and the Berlin Cathedral.

Opening hours: daily, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Ticket: 9.80 euros; free for children under 6.

- Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

It is also known as the Holocaust Museum and was built to honor the millions of Jews killed during the Nazi regime. It is located near Potsdamer Platz, Brandenburg Gate and you can combine all these places to visit in Berlin in a 1-day itinerary.

– Bode Museum

Just like the Pergamon Museum, it is located on Museum Island. It houses one of the largest collections of Byzantine art in the world!

Opening hours: open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday. Closed on Mondays.

Ticket: 10 euros, and visitors under 18 do not pay.
